TOM - When doctrine and covenants section 4 says the field is white all ready to harvest, is it referring to wheat or cotton? I've always assumed wheat but I'm not so sure how white it gets when it's ready to harvest. Any thoughts?

JOEL - When Jesus was sitting at the famous well, near Sychar. He had had a conversation with a Samaritan woman, and she had gone into the City and told the people of that conversation. As people were running towards the well Jesus noticed the Samaritans coming over the fields, and called the attention of the disciples to the approaching multitude when He said:

"Lift up your eyes and look on the fields; for they are white already to harvest." (John 4: 35)

Jesus saw in these Samaritans the beginning of a harvest of souls. And the "Lord of the harvest" is, of course, Jesus Christ. (See Matt. 9:37-38; Rev. 14:14; Alma 17:13; 26:5-7.)

I don't think it was cotton He was talking about in these scriptures; I have always assumed it to be wheat as well. When you compare the green color of the growing wheat to the color it is when it has fully matured and ready to harvest it looks white. The New Testament refers to every stage of the cycle of agricultural production: plowing, planting or sowing, cultivating, harvesting or reaping, transporting, threshing, sifting, treading, and storing. The harvesting stage is referred to as being white because of the bright almost white color the wheat takes on when it is ready to come up.
