RON - I was approached by a church member who has a Mormon
friend that lost her baby. She asked me what do
Mormons believe when a baby dies. Can you help me
with this question as I do not know much about the
Mormon faith.
JOEL - My wife and I also lost a baby girl unexpectedly when
she was only 5 weeks old.
We believe that little children are innocent and
completely without sin, which is why they are not
baptized in our church until they reach the age of
accountability(8 years).
We believe children who die before this age are
automatically saved in the highest kingdom of God in
heaven. Our prophet Joseph Smith received this
knowledge by vision in the Kirtland Temple, January
21, 1836. On that occasion it was shown that ". . .
all children who die before they arrive at the years
of accountability are saved in the celestial kingdom
of heaven." (History of the Church, Vol. 2, p. 381.)
"But Jesus said, Suffer little children to come unto
me, and forbid them not, for of such is the kingdom of
heaven.
And he laid hands on them, and departed thence."
(Matt. 19:13-15)
Revelations given in our day also show that little
children who are deprived of the experiences in mortal
life are, by eternal decree, redeemed from the
temptation of Satan.(Doctrine and Covenants 29:46-48
;
In the Book of Mormon - Mosiah 15:24-25
; Moroni 8:10-24).
Joseph Smith also taught the doctrine that the infant
child that was laid away in death would come up in the
resurrection as a child; and, pointing to the mother
of a lifeless child, he said to her, "You will have
the joy, the pleasure, and satisfaction of nurturing
this child, after its resurrection, until it reaches
the full stature of its spirit." There is restitution,
there is growth, there is development, after the
resurrection from death." (Gospel Doctrine, pp. 452-56.)
Not only will the parents be able to finish raising
their child but these children will still have the
opportunity to marry and have their own families
during the Millenial reign of Christ on the earth.
Parents who have lost young children can take great
comfort in these doctrines and look forward to the day
when they will be reunited with their child in the
next life.
We call our daughter our "Celestial beakon", in that
we know she is already going to be there, which compels
us to do all we can to be there with her too.
