ROBERT - Why did the angel Moroni visit Joseph Smith 3 times in one night and repeat the same message?
JOEL - As the saying goes, "Repetition is the mother of memory". The number three has significant scriptural meaning. It represents divine wholeness, completeness, and perfection. Noah had three sons (Gen. 6:10). Three visitors appeared to Abraham (Genesis 18:2). Jonah was inside the belly of the fish three days and nights (Jonah 1:17), a representation of Jesus being in the earth three days and nights(Matt 12:40, Luke 24:7). Jesus answered Satan's threefold temptations with three scriptural references (Matthew 4:1-11). Jesus' ministry lasted three years. Peter denied Jesus three times (Luke 22:54-62), and three times Jesus affirmed his love (John 21:15-17). There are three members of the Godhead. There were three original witnesses to the the angel and the gold plates (D&C 5: 11). There were three days of darkness over the Land of Nephi when Jesus died (3 Nephi 8: 3). Peter heard a voice three times telling him the same things (Acts 11: 1-11). In order to be complete and perfect and make sure Joseph received and remembered the message the the Angel visited him 3 times and repeated the same message.
