QUESTION - Why do LDS Members address each other as Brother and Sister and how important is this?
JOEL - There are two reasons: 1. We are all literally spirit children of our Heavenly Father, so since we are is children that makes us all brothers and sisters in the spiritual sense.
2. King Benjamin said: "And now, because of the covenant which ye have made ye shall be called the children of Christ, his sons, and his daughters; for behold, this day he hath spiritually begotten you; for ye say that your hearts are changed through faith on his name; therefore, ye are born of him and have become his sons and his daughters.
So not only are we the spirit children of Heavenly Father we are also children of Christ when we enter a covenant with Jesus, which in that sense makes us all brothers and sisters in the Gospel.
It is important to refer to each other as brother and sister to differentiate us from all other people of the world who are not the children of Christ (even though they are also still our brothers and sisters in the spiritual sense). It reminds us that we are all children of God and that we are all equal. It unites us while stripping away the perceptions that would divide us.
