MICHAEL - Not two long ago I heard a general authority teach the principle that a true principle will be repeated more than once in the scriptures. I have been looking for that teaching and I can't find it. Any ideas?
JOEL - The folowing scriptures comes to mind:
"This is the third time I am coming to you. In the mouth of two or three witnesses shall every word be established.." (2 Cor 13: 1)
"And ye shall go forth in the power of my Spirit, preaching my gospel, two by two, in my name," (D&C 42:6)
This principle is repeated in at least 15 other scriptures. (Rev 11:3, Mat 18:16, D&C 42:80, D&C 6:28, D&C 128:3)
This refers to the devine law of witnesses. It means, something that is important won't just be said once or just by one person; it will be repeated at least one or two more times. So this is why we will hear the same gospel principles be repeated by more than one prophet that we listen to, or by those who speak to us in the scriptures.
The Bible witnesses of Jesus Christ by prophecies of His coming, by accounts of His ministry, and by the testimonies of those who carried His message to the world. The Book of Mormon has the same content: witnesses preceding, during, and following the ministry of the Messiah. Hence the subtitle of "Another Testament of Jesus Christ".
Elder Russel M. Nelson said:
"Scriptural witnesses authenticate each other. This concept was explained long ago when a prophet wrote that the Book of Mormon was “written for the intent that ye may believe [the Bible]; and if ye believe [the Bible] ye will believe [the Book of Mormon] also.”(Morm 7:9) Each book refers to the other. Each book stands as evidence that God lives and speaks to His children by revelation to His prophets." (Scriptural Witnesses, Elder Russell M. Nelson, Liahona, Nov. 2007)
