KELLY - Our youth want to have a Masquerade Ball at Halloweenand and of course, the mask issue came up. Does the rule apply to "at church" activities only? If we had the Ball at a private location off church grounds would we have to refrain from wearing masks? I can't seem to find anything about this.
JOEL - You can't find anything because there really is no "official" policy about masks. It is mostly wise council from our church leaders based on the following three reasons:
1. There is a safety issue in that masks can often impair ones vision, which can lead to accidents.
2. When there is a group of people together, including both kids and adults, it's best to know and be able to identify who everyone is so there is no problem with strangers.
3. And some masks can be pretty gruesome depicting satanic or violent characters, which is not really in keeping with the idea that we are supposed to be children of God and want avoid even the very appearance of evil. (1 Thes. 5: 22).
I would say that this counsel would apply to anything that is sponsored by the church, whether it is at the church or not. But this is really all up to the opinion and counsel of your local Bishop or Stake President for your area. You should speak with them
