KANE - Seems lately so many mass shootings are taking place in our society. Wondering where mass shooters will end up in the next world? Do you think they'll go to the black hole? At least they deserve it, I'm thinking.
JOEL - If it were up to me I would agree with you. Fortunately we are not the ones who have to pass judgment on these people.
According to the Scriptures: "The blasphemy against the Holy Ghost, which shall not be forgiven in the world nor out of the world, is in that ye commit murder wherein ye shed innocent blood, and assent unto my death, after ye have received my new and everlasting covenant, saith the Lord God; and he that abideth not this law can in nowise enter into my glory, but shall be damned, saith the Lord." (D&C 132: 27)
“I speak unto the church. Thou shalt not kill; and he that kills shall not have forgiveness in this world, nor in the world to come” (D&C 42:18) Alma said, “Whosoever murdereth against the light and knowledge of God, it is not easy for him to obtain forgiveness” (Alma 39:6)
Notice these scriptures say those who have murdered after having received the new and everlasting covenant; in other words temple-endowed members of God's Church who have committed this sin, will not receive forgiveness and will lose their chance for exaltation.
Murder is unforgivable because of the nature of the sin. In order for a sin to be forgiven, the sinner must repent. Part of the repentence process is to restore what the sinner has taken away from someone, which obviously one who murders cannot do. It is "as though there had been no redemption made, except it be the loosing of the bands of death” (Alma 11:41). They cannot be forgiven but can still be resurected and obtain the Telestial Kingdom but not exaltation.
Most of the other people in this world who have murdered might, depending on the circumstances, be able to end up in some level of glory in heaven after they have suffered in Hell for some time as punishment for the sin and then come forth in the last resurrection.
Elder Spencer W. Kimball wrote: "Even among willful murderers there are grades and categories. There are those who kill in drunkenness, in rage, in anger, in jealousy. There are those who kill for gain, for power, for fear. There are those who kill for lust. They certainly will suffer different degrees of punishment hereafter." (Miracle of Forgiveness 129–30)
President Harold B. Lee stated regarding murder: "It is in the same category as the rebellion of Satan and his hosts and therefore it would not be surprising if the penalties to be imposed upon a murderer were to be of similar character as the penalties meted out to those spirits which were cast out of heaven with Satan." (“The Sixth Commandment” 88)
Notice he said "it would not be surprising" if they were to join Satan and his angels, but he did not say it is certain. There actually appears to no clear teaching among church leaders on this subject of who else will be in Outer Darkness with Satan. But most likely it will be the original one third who were cast out, perhaps some resurrected mortals who have committed murder(D&C 132: 27), and the resurrected mortal sons of perdition who have sufferd the second death by denying the Holy Ghost in this life after having received it (D&C 76: 34-36).
