JON - Can or was there any person in the Bible or BOM who received the priesthood without laying of the hands. Possibly by the Gift of the spirit of calling of a prophet of old. Also the explanation of perspective concerning Cornelius. It seems that some of the prophets were given it by the spirit. Can that be so. (Not today after the restoration) but in times of old.

JOEL - I don't know of anywhere it specifically says hands were not laid on a person to receive the priesthood or be ordained. Adam ordained his descendants by the laying on of hands (see D&C 107:40-50). When Jacob blessed Ephraim and Manasseh, he laid his hands on their heads (see Genesis 48:14-19). Alma "ordained priests and elders, by laying on his hands according to the order of God"

"And now it came to pass that after Alma had made an end of speaking unto the people of the church, which was established in the city of Zarahemla, he ordained priests and elders, by laying on his hands according to the order of God, to preside and watch over the church." (Alma 6: 1). (See also Num 27:18,23, Deut 34:9, Acts 6:1-6, Acts 13:2-3)

If laying on of hands is the order of God for most all priesthood ordinances, I would think that is the way it must always be done. Just because laying on of hands might not be specifically mentioned it doesn't mean it wasn't done.
According to Joseph Smith, "before the world was created, Jesus Christ, the great Jehovah and firstborn of God the Father in the spirit world, covenanted to use the power he had obtained from the Father to implement God's program for the eternal happiness of all God's children" (Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, p. 190)
Even though it doesn't say hands were laid on Christ's head, if that is the order of God, we might assume that is the way it happened.
