JANNMAREE - I was reading in the scriptures the other day in 3rd Nehi (I can't remember the exact chapter) but I got the
impression besides the Lord having nails driven in his hands and feet that there was something driven into his side
or something of that affect? I was just curious.
JOEL - When Jesus appeared to His disciples on the American continent He told them:
"Arise and come forth unto me, that ye may thrust your hands into my side, and also that ye may feel the prints of the
nails in my hands and in my feet, that ye may know that I am the God of Israel," (3 Nephi 11:14-15)
He asked them to do this so they might know for sure that it was Him. They knew from past prophesies that He
would be crucified and the marks on His hands and side would be a sign to them of His identity (2 Nephi 6:9,
Mosiah 3: 9, Psalms 22: 16, Zechariah 12:10).
The New Testament tells us how he got the mark on His side:
"But when they came to Jesus, and saw that he was dead already, they brake not his legs:
But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith came there out blood and water.
And he that saw it bare record, and his record is true: and he knoweth that he saith true, that ye might believe.
For these things were done, that the scripture should be fulfilled, A bone of him shall not be broken.
And again another scripture saith, They shall look on him whom they pierced." (John 19: 33-37)
