JAMIE - A member shared with me her patriarchal blessing, her blessings says she will be alive during second coming and this member is 64 years old. Do you think we are very close to second coming?
JOEL - When you consider the fact that we are all eternally alive in some sense of the word(mortal souls, spirit person, resurrected person) then the blessing makes some sense.We will be live resurrected beings when the savior returns if we are included in the resurrection of the just. Having said that, in my opinion I can only say that I don't know if we are close or not to the second coming. I can only say according to the way the world is going we are getting closer.
President Gordon B. Hinckley said:
The era in which we live is the fulness of times spoken of in the scriptures, when God has brought together all of the elements of previous dispensations. From the day that He and His Beloved Son manifested themselves to the boy Joseph, there has been a tremendous cascade of enlightenment poured out upon the world. The hearts of men have turned to their fathers in fulfillment of the words of Malachi. The vision of Joel has been fulfilled wherein he declared:
“And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions:
“And also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out my spirit.
“And I will shew wonders in the heavens and in the earth, blood, and fire, and pillars of smoke.
“The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and the terrible day of the Lord come.
“And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be delivered: for in mount Zion and in Jerusalem shall be deliverance, as the Lord hath said, and in the remnant whom the Lord shall call” (Joel 2:28–32).
There has been more of scientific discovery during these years than during all of the previous history of mankind. Transportation, communication, medicine, public hygiene, the unlocking of the atom, the miracle of the computer, with all of its ramifications, have blossomed forth, particularly in our own era."(Oct 2001)
This is because of the outpouring of the spirit to all mankind that started with the restoration of the gospel.
Notice how technology increased exponentially right at about the time the gospel was restored
President Hinckley also said:
“The Lord is fulfilling His promise that His gospel shall be as the stone cut out of the mountain without hands which would roll forth and fill the whole earth, as Daniel saw in vision.” (Daniel 2:31–45)
When President Nelson was born in 1924 there were only a little more than half a million members. Now 100 years later it is more than 17 million. And the missionaries are rolling forth the gospel to the entire world.
The world is ripening in iniquity as Timothy prophesied:
1 This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come.
2 For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy,
3 Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good,
4 Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God;
5 Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.
6 For of this sort are they which creep into houses, and lead captive silly women laden with sins, led away with divers lusts,
7 Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth. (2 Timothy 3: 1-7)
So things are happening that suggest we are getting there, but then of course according to Jesus:
"And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.
But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only." (Matt 24: 30,36)
