JAMES - Will the temporal skills we have studied to gain and labored our lives practicing, e.g. farmers, doctors, engineers, etc., be necessary or utilized in the next world?
JOEL - Not sure what you mean by "the next world". Probably none of those things exist in the Spirit world since we are all spirit beings that need no physical things, although we will likely still retain the knowledge and experience of what we did as mortals on earth which will at least help us to relate with other spirits with similar backgrounds. I have always wondered though who makes those robes that the angels wear when they appear to people on earth? :-)
For the period during the Millennium some of those things will be used but probably not all. Because there is no death or disease, doctors and anyone associated with health care will be out of a job. We won't need any morticians, funeral homes, hospitals, pharmacies, and because all will live in peace and harmony, we probably won't need prisons, law enforcement, military or lawyers anymore either. Since the scriptures say in that day that "the lion shall lie down with the lamb and eat straw as the ox", one might assume that people will also not eat meat. Children will still be born, grow up, marry, advance to old age, and pass through something equivalent to death. Crops will be planted, harvested, and eaten; industries will be expanded, cities built, and education fostered; men will continue to care for their own needs, handle their own affairs, and enjoy free agency to live out their time under the direct leadership of Jesus(Isa. 65:20-25, D. & C. 101:23-31, 3 Nephi 28: 30-40)
Brigham Young said: "The order of society will be as it is when Christ comes to reign a thousand years; there will be every sort of sect and party, and every individual following what he supposes to be the best in religion, and in everything else, similar to what it is now." (Brigham Young, JD 2:316.)
President George Q. Cannon said "When the Millennium dawns, Satan bound and the elements of the earth at our disposal and under our control, there will be no hunger, no thirst, no nakedness, no vagrants, no houseless people; all will have that which is necessary to supply their physical wants. But there will be no waste. One man will not be allowed to lord it over another and take possession of more than he needs; but all will have a fulness, Satan will be bound. He will not have power to inflict the misery he has done and is doing."
After the Millennium when all have been judged and assigned a kingdom of heaven nothing has really been said about any of those skills being needed in the three kingdoms of heaven, although of course we will still retain the knowledge, wisdom, and experience we already have which may help as we minister to people in other kingdoms.
