ED - Should the priesthood line of authority change from when a person is ordained an Elder, when he receives the Melchizedek Priesthood, and change again when he ordained to the office of a High Priest by a different person? How can I get my line of authority?
JOEL - Your actual line of authority goes back through the person who last ordained you to whatever office you now hold. Here is a statement from the Church:
"A priesthood line of authority is determined by the priesthood office held by the officiator at the time the ordination took place. For example, if a father who is an elder ordains his son to the office of elder, the son’s line of authority is traced through the father’s elder ordination. If the father is a high priest at the time he ordains his son, the son’s line of authority is traced through the father’s high priest ordination."
You can request a copy of your line of authority by email by following these steps:
Send an email to lineofauthority@ldschurch.org.
To receive the priesthood line of authority request form in English, type the letters PLA in the subject line.
To receive the request form in Spanish, type the letters PLA SP in the subject line.
To receive the request form in Portuguese, type the letters PLA PT in the subject line.
Instructions for completing the request form and receiving the priesthood line of authority by email will be included in the return email.
When doing it by phone call 800-453-3860 ext 23500 then choose option 6, then option 3. After the message and tone leave a voice mail message with your fax number or mailing address. The form will be mailed to you.
When filling out the form it is helpful to have as much of the following information as possible:
1. Full name of the priesthood holder
2. Date of birth
3. Current ward and stake
4. Address and Zip Code
5. Elder ordination date
6. Who performed the Elder ordination

8. High Priest ordination date if applicable
9. Who performed the High Priest ordination
10. Ward and stake where High Priest ordination was performed
11. Any Melchizedek Priesthood ordination performed by the priesthood holder
You can also use the form I have on this website by clicking Priesthood Line of Authority
