BOB - Why does the church continue to show the 12 descriptions on facsimile 1 in the book of Abraham, when the church admits they are not correct descriptions?
JOEL - It's probably mostly for historical purposes that it remains with the Book of Abraham. However, we assume that the modern day meanings and interpretations of the facsmlie by egyptologists actually represents what the original meaning of it was in the past. The facsimilies are not old enouh to have been from the time of Abraham and are therefore most likely copies of copies of what Abraham originally drew, and therefore subject to distortions and changes over the centuries. Joseph Smith may have through revelation simply restored what the original description of the original facsimile really was, similar to the way by revelation he retranslated parts of the Bible to what the writers and God originally meant to say. If that is the case then the descriptions really do describe the original meaning of the facsimile and therefore they remain in the scriptures.
There is also the point that we only have a few fragments of the large rolls of papyri that Joseph originally had, which may have actually contained the Book of Abraham and these remaining fragments are not part of it all.
These are just a couple of theories. Even if the descriptions don't match the facsimile it is all we have that is left of the original rolls of papyri that Joseph Smith had and are of significant historic value and therefore remain in the scriptures.
