ANGIE - How does the Church respond to the scientific data the suggests the a glass of wine is good for your heart
JOEL - Some past studies have claimed that a daily glass of wine might boost antioxidants, increase "good" cholesterol and lower the risk of heart disease. However, studies as recent as January 2022 have shown that any level of drinking can lead to loss of healthy life, according to the World Heart Federation. In a new policy briefing, the organisation said it wanted to "challenge the widespread notion that drinking moderate amounts of alcohol can decrease the risk of heart disease and called for urgent action to tackle the global rise in deaths caused by drinking."
According to the World Heart Federation committee: "The portrayal of alcohol as necessary for a vibrant social life has diverted attention from the harms of alcohol use, as have the frequent and widely publicised claims that moderate drinking, such as a glass of red wine a day, can offer protection against cardiovascular disease. These claims are at best misinformed and at worst an attempt by the alcohol industry to mislead the public about the danger of their product."The federation, working with the World Health Organisation (WHO), said alcohol is a "psychoactive and harmful substance that can cause significant damage to the human body". Also that drinking increases the risk of cardiovascular disease, cancer, digestive diseases and injury. "The evidence is clear: any level of alcohol consumption can lead to loss of healthy life"(Daily Glass of Wine Is Bad for You, Heart Federation Says in New Policy)
These recent studies provide more support for the abstinance of alcohol that we follow according to the Word of Wisdom. Scientific research is a forever changing source of information as more studies are presented and can make it confusing as to what we should and should not take into our bodies. Latter-day revelation on the subject has always provided good counsel. However, we don't follow the Word of Wisdom simply because of the health bennefits; we follow it because we want to be obedient to what God wants us to do.
