ANGELA - In the Old Testament there is a scripture that says "God is not a man . . . neither the son of
man, that he should repent" (Num 23: 19). Then there are other contradictory scriptures like Jonah 3: 9-10 where it says,
"Who can tell if God will turn and repent, and turn away from his fierce anger that we perish not?
And God saw their works, that they turned away from their evil way; and God repented of the evil, that he had said that he would do unto them and he did it not."
So Does God repent or not?
JOEL - There are a couple of ways to look at these verses. God of course does not need to repent of anything. These scriptures could just mean that God changed His mind about something He was going to do.
Also, these verses were it says God repented are corrected in the Inspired version of the Bible. Jonah 3; 9-10 in the Inspired Revision is significantly different.
Who can tell, if we will repent, and turn unto God, but he will turn away from us his fierce anger, that we perish not?
And God saw their works that they turned from their evil way and repented; and God turned away the evil that he had said he would bring upon them.
Here are some other examples:
2 Sam. 24:16 . . . the Lord repented him of the evil, and said to the angel that destroyed the people, It is enough: stay now thine hand.
Inspired Version
. . . ."for the people repented, and the Lord stayed the hand of the angel. . . ."
Exodus 32:14 "And the Lord repented of the evil which he thought to do unto the people."
Inspired Version
"And the Lord said unto Moses, If they will repent of the evil which they have done, I will spare them and turn away my fierce wrath. . . ."
