JERRY - What is the church's view on the following.
The word and law of God is unchanging. The one thing that we as humans can count on is the law of God being true and unchanging. God is bound by his own laws. He must operate within eternal law, or is he unbounded?

JOEL - There are certain laws that are eternal that God follows, otherwise He would not be God. An example would be in the relationship between our obedience and blessings:

"There is a law, irrevocably decreed in heaven before the foundations of this world, upon which all blessings are predicated- And when we obtain any blessing from God, it is by obedience to that law upon which it is predicated. (D&C 130:20-21)

and

"I, the Lord, am bound when ye do what I say; but when ye do not what I say, ye have no promise (D&C 82:10)

And according to Alma, "God would cease to be God" if he were to allow mercy to destroy justice, or justice to overpower mercy, or the plan of redemption to be fulfilled on unjust conditions (Alma 42:13).
So God adheres to certain eternal and even natural laws at all times; that is why He is unchanging.
Human beings however are not unchanging. So sometimes the laws He wants us to follow must be adapted to our abilities as we grow and progress.
President John Taylor said, "Change succeeds change in human affairs, but the laws of God in everything are correct and true; in every stage and phase of nature, everything on the earth, in the waters and in the atmosphere is governed by unchangeable, eternal laws" (Gospel Kingdom, p. 70, Salt Lake City, 1987)

JERRY - When has a person been considered to have had their chance? If a person has been a member of the church since age 8 but has been inactive and does not believe in alot of the church teachings but believes in alot of the same principles, but never becomes active again, are they considered to have had their chance.

JOEL - Only God can be the judge of this. All we can do is the best we can in perfecting ourselves and helping those around us to perfect themselves, by sharing the Gospel with them. After that it is by the grace of God as to what becomes of them.
