JANIS - I read a recent article that the Russan Orthodox Church and the Jews are upset that we perform proxy baptisims for some of there dead. If they don't believe that we are legitimate, why should they care WHAT we do? It seems to me the info collected is a very valuable geneology tool and will help people find their ancestors. I am saddened that they would try to have those collections of names removed from our archives. What's their problem??

JOEL - If you can find out the answer to this question please let me know. From what I understand it is not everyone from those religions that are upset; just a very vocal group of individuals who are looking for a reason to be offended and make the LDS church look bad. Many others from the same faiths are just as perplexed as you are about the complaints, and don't see any problem with what the LDS church is doing. A good example of this is an article from a jewish rabi at this site:

An LDS friend of mine had a baby in a Catholic hospital. The baby had some life threatening medical problems and, because the mother was unconscious at the time, someone quickly performed a Catholic baptisim. Fortunately the baby did not die. Was the LDS mother upset? On the contrary, she was very touched for their concern for the baby's eternal welfare, and thanked them for what they did.
I do hope that in general the more reasonable heads will prevail so the valuable record collection efforts can continue.
