JOEL - In the second Timothy verse Paul wrote to Timothy complaining about the beliefs of some people:
"Who concerning the truth have erred, saying that the resurrection is past already; and overthrow the faith of some." (2 Tim 2:18)
This is evidence that people were incorrectly believing that the resurrection was over and would never happen again. Our belief is that no others will be resurrected until the second coming, unless they have a special mission to perform that requires a resurrected body, such as in the case of John the Baptist, and Peter, James, and John.
Acording to Joseph Fielding Smith:
"It is the opinion of some that the resurrection is
going on all the time now, but this is purely
speculation without warrant in the scriptures. It is
true that the Lord has power to call forth any person
or persons from the dead, as he may desire, especially
if they have a mission to perform which would require
their resurrection. For
example, we have the cases of Peter, James, and
Moroni." (Doctrines of Salvation, 1954-1956)
So it is not just bringing someone back from the dead like Jesus did with Lazarus;
it is an actual resurrection of these few people.
The Matthew scripture is subject to interpretation according to what religion you belong to:
"And the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which slept arose,
And came out of the graves after his resurrection, and went into the holy city, and appeared unto many."
(Matt. 27:52-53)
The subject of these verses is what happened after the death and resurrection of Jesus. It specifically remarks that the people rose "after His(Jesus) resurrection", suggesting that now that Jesus was resurrected others could be as well. The LDS understand this as being a literal resurrection of some people at the same time Jesus was resurrected.
James E. Talmage said:
"The victory over death was made manifest in the
resurrection of the crucified Christ; He was the first
to pass from death to immortality and so is justly
known as "the first fruits of them that slept." That
the resurrection of the dead so inaugurated is to be
extended to every one who has or shall have lived is
proved by an abundance of scriptural evidence.
Following our Lord's resurrection, others who had
slept in the tomb arose and were seen of many, not as
spirit-apparitions but
as resurrected beings possessing immortalized bodies:
"And the graves were opened; and many bodies of the
saints which slept arose, and came out of the graves
after his resurrection, and went into the holy city,
and appeared unto many." (Jesus The Christ, p. 23)
