BRYCE - How did god become a god? Did he once live as we live. Please answer with bible or book of mormon scripture or prophet messages.

JOEL - I don't know. There have been ideas and suggestions from various church leaders and the scriptures only give vague hints at it. The idea of God the Father having gone through an earth life like us is not really official church doctrine nor is knowing the answer to this question part of the "fullness" of the gospel that we need to understand right now. However, it is something that Joseph Smith and other latter-day prophets believed to be true.
Jesus said that he did nothing that he had not seen the Father do:

"The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do: for what things soever he doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise."(John 5:19)

If Jesus does everything the Father did, could this mean that His Father also lived on an earth like Jesus did and as we do now?

Joseph Smith said:
"God himself was once as we are now, and is an exalted man, and sits enthroned in yonder heavens! " "God himself, the Father of us all, dwelt on an earth the same as Jesus Christ himself did." (Journal of Discourses, Vol. 6, p. 3).

President Lorenzo Snow once said:
'As man is, God once was; as God is, man may be.' (Church History in the Fullness of Times, p. 452)

If this is true then it means that our Father in Heaven had a Father in Heaven who created His spirit and placed him on a planet with a body to work out His salvation the same as we do now. Theoretically this cycle has been going on in the eternal past and will continue on into the eternal future.
But like President Hinckley said when asked the same question:

"That gets into some pretty deep theology that we don't know very much about." (Sunday Interview -- By Don Lattin, Chronicle Religion Writer The San Francisco Chronicle, Sunday April 13, 1997)
